Most leaders spend their careers planning for the next promotion, quarter or strategic initiative. Few spend enough time planning for the most certain thing: their death.
This isn’t a morbid exercise. It’s a clarifying leadership practice.
I’ve studied ancient Egypt and been through the tombs; the ancient Egyptians were actually teaching us how to live through the awareness of the importance of death. Walk through almost any cemetery, and you will notice the tombstones have the individual’s name, their year of birth, a dash and the year they died.
We can’t control the first date on the tombstone, and we rarely control the second. We do, however, have some influence over the dash.
